County Road 124 open again following early morning chemical spill (update)

Hazardous material was contained to the facility, police say

9:15 a.m. update from the Guelph Fire Department

On Oct. 11, 2018 at approximately 5:20 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported hazardous material incident at 6986 Wellington Hwy 124 S., FloChem.

Arriving at the scene, firefighters were informed by staff that there was an incident in the chemical storage area, producing heat and vapours. The Hazardous Materials Trailer was brought to the scene and the Hazmat Technician team was assembled. Two Firefighters entered the chemical storage area in   encapsulated suits and reported that the spilled products had stopped reacting, resulting in no further production of heat or vapours. All products were contained within the storage area.

There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.

There is no estimate of damage at this time.

Original 8 a.m. information

Police say traffic is now moving again following an early morning chemical spill at FloChem on County Road 124 temporarily shut down the road between Guelph and Cambridge.

Police report that the spill, which was a hazardous material, was contained to the facility, located just west of Guelph, and that no one was injured.

The facility has now been turned back over to the operators of it and emergency response vehicles are expected to be clear of the scene shortly.

Cause of the spill has not yet been released.
