Investigators cleared eight cases and laid 33 charges as a result of tips to Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington (CSGW) last year.

“Once again, brave individuals from our communities have done the right thing,” said Sarah Bowers-Peter, program coordinator for CSGW, in a news release. “In spite of the remarkable circumstances throughout 2020, the public has come through to do their part to keep their communities safe.”

The local agency received 783 tips during 2020, down by 24 from 2019.

As a result of tip investigations, police seized $71,279 in illegal drugs, personal property and cash. That’s about $4,000 less in value that the record set the year prior.

CSGW is not a police organization but does work with Guelph Police Service, Wellington County OPP and other investigative agencies to offer an anonymous method for the public to report information that could lead to arrests for criminal activities.

“Regardless of the conditions around us, Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington did not miss a day of taking tips in 2020. We are proud of that,” said Bowers-Peter.

Since the local Crime Stoppers chapter was founded in 1998, the board of directors has approved $173,455 in reward money for tipsters whose information leads to arrests.
