Starting on the weekend, a portion of Gordon Street will have one lane of traffic reserved for Guelph Transit buses only.

From Oct. 19 to 23, the northbound section of Gordon Street between Kortright Road West and South Ring Road will be temporarily transformed into a “transit priority corridor.”

Only Guelph Transit vehicles will be permitted to travel in the right-hand temporary bus-only lane, while northbound motorists will be able to use the left-hand lane and cyclists will continue to use the bike lane.

Motorists will only be allowed to enter the bus-only lane if an emergency vehicle approaches from behind and will have to reenter the left-hand lane after the emergency vehicle has passed.

Signs and traffic barrels will be placed along that section of Gordon Street to indicate the bus-only lane.

In a news release, the city said adding the bus lane pilot will be a safe, accessible and sustainable road design that accommodates all modes of transportation.

The city is currently developing its Transportation Master Plan. Earlier this fall, the city conducted a two-week pilot of a protected bike lane on Woolwich Street as part of the plan’s development.
