Vaccination appointment times have been tentatively set aside for eligible workers at Guelph’s two Cargill Canada plants, confirms a spokesperson for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health.

“We’re working with Cargill to help them address some barriers to pre-registration,” explained spokesperson Danny Williamson. “Because they have had significant outbreaks and are a higher-risk operation, we want to ensure their employees will be getting vaccinated when they are eligible.”

Those vaccinations are slated to start April 26, depending on vaccine availability and the eligibility of workers under the provincial guidelines, at established clinics.

“We are very pleased to work with WDG Public Health on this initiative. Our response throughout this pandemic is guided by our values – putting people first and doing the right thing,” said Jon Nash, global lead for Cargill’s protein and salt business, in an email. “We have been unwavering in our commitment to protect the health and safety of our employees, who are working tirelessly to ensure millions of people have food to eat. We are applying these same values when it comes to vaccinations.”

Any large employer in the region experiencing challenges pre-registering staff is urged to reach out to the health unit for help, Williamson noted.

“We encourage all essential workers to pre-register for their vaccination as soon as possible.”
