Construction of a new apartment complex on the former St. Matthias Church property in Guelph's south end is expected to start in January.

Scott Higgins, president of HIP Developments, said they are currently working with city staff on a site plan approval.

Demolition of the former Anglican church and community hub is expected to happen in October.

"More details on architectural design will be released in October as the complete redesign is well underway," Higgins said.

The at-times controversial development will see an five-storey, 81-unit apartment building built on the property, located on the northeast corner of the Kortright Road/Edinburgh Road intersection.

The sale and development of the property was opposed by two neighbourhood groups who wanted it preserved for community use. They were upset when the Anglican Diocese sold it to HIP.

The matter went to the Ontario Municipal Board but a hearing was averted when HIP Developments and the City agreed to some concessions, namely changing the size of the development and taking measure to ensure it would not be just for students.

A total of 25 percent of the units will be one bedroom.

Previous incarnations of the project called for six stories and stacked townhouses.

HIP Developments is the owner of the Solstice 1 and Solstice 2 buildings on Gordon Street.
