Although it is years away from potentially becoming a reality, the city has revealed tentative design plans for the proposed new bicycle facility planned for Eastview Park.

The plans were part of a memo sent to members of council last week.

The city owned and operated bike skills facility is likely not going to be built until at least 2028, and that would be a first phase. Phase two and three of the park would be dependent partly on how much use the park gets.

The 2028 capital forecast has set aside $416,000 for the building of the first stage. Developing the concept plans and its related work cost $50,000.

Phase 1 would include an asphalt surface. Scooters and skateboards could also use the facility.

"The goal in design was to ensure that phase one could be a stand-alone facility. By building phase one first, the City is able to gauge public interest to see if there is a desire for the implementation of the remaining phases," the city report says.

Making the facility available for all ages and all skill levels is important, says the report.

"An asphalt surface is preferred as it reduces maintenance and risk while allowing for a broader range of use. The additional benefit of asphat is that it can be used by skateboards and scooters as well as bicycles."

"If phase one creates enough public interest and a successful culture around the facility is formed, then building the remaining phases could be justified. Phases two and three contain components that range in skill level and age level and would require an increase in maintenance from phase one."

The city did a survey that found that of the 214 people who participated, 94 per cent were interested in a bicycle skills facility at Eastview.
