Two of Canada’s finest home-grown artists will come together for an evening of earthy, soulful and powerful music when Digging Roots and Dione Taylor take the stage at River Run Centre on Friday, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Richardson GMP Music Series.

Digging Roots

Featuring musical partners Shoshona Kish and Raven Kanatakta, Toronto-based Digging Roots is a musical group that balances Indigenous tradition and modern aesthetics. In creating their music, Kish and Kanatakta utilize a traditional Anishinabek “song lines” composition technique, which traces melody and rhythm from contours of the land. This traditional method is paired with modern blues and roots-inspired songwriting to create Digging Roots’ unique sound.

As well as Kish and Kanatakta, Digging Roots includes bassist André Blais, guitarist Mike Celia and drummer Skye Polson. The well-travelled musicians have kept busy during recent years with tours across North America, Europe and Australia. Juno Award winners for Aboriginal album of the year for their 2010 recording We Are, Digging Roots’ works also include the Juno-nominated albums Seeds (2007) and For the Light (2015).

Dione Taylor

Since bursting onto the music scene with her Juno-nominated debut album, 2004’s Open Your Eyes, Dione Taylor has become known as one of Canada’s finest blues and R&B performers. Her acclaimed appearances at festivals and concert theatres across the U.S., Canada and Asia have included performances for Queen Elizabeth II and the President of the United States.

A pastor’s daughter from Saskatchewan, Taylor was born and raised in a family she describes as “connected to the gift of song.” Her latest recording, Born Free, has been described as a powerful, soulful and spiritual album that captures the essence of the Prairies. Taylor will take the stage with her band, The Backsliderz, during her River Run Centre performance.

Tickets to see Digging Roots and Dione Taylor cost $42 for adults, $40 for seniors and students. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID.
