Ward 5 Councillor Cathy Downer has joined the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Board of Directors as a member of the Large Urban Caucus.
She was acclaimed to the position (Monday) at the annual AMO conference taking place in Windsor.
“I look forward to being a strong voice on the AMO board on issues that matter to cities like Guelph – financial sustainability; Ontario Municipal Board reform; and the arbitration system for emergency services workers,” said Councillor Downer. “I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to work with my fellow councillors and mayors from across Ontario to strengthen our relationship with the Province.”
The 41-member AMO board is comprised of municipal elected officials who represent different caucuses: large urban; small urban; county; northern; regional and single tier; and rural. AMO provides a strong, unified voice in advocating to the Province on key municipal issues.
As a member of Guelph City Council for 14 years, Councillor Downer will bring Guelph’s voice and experiences to AMO and the provincial government.
She will also bring experience in Provincial advocacy, including as a member of AMO’s Long Term Care and Age Friendly Community Task Force and the OMB Reform Municipal Leaders Working Group, which recently organized a Municipal Summit on OMB reform.
AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments.
The annual AMO conference brings together representatives from hundreds of municipalities and other organizations for education, information sharing, and delegation meetings with Ministers and provincial officials.
Speakers at the conference include the Premier of Ontario, several cabinet ministers, leaders of the Ontario PC and NDP parties, and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
