Driver who struck pedestrian that later died faces possible $150 fine

Len Humprhries died in hospital 13 days after being struck

The driver of a pickup truck that struck a Guelph senior who later died in hospital has been charged with a Highway Traffic Act violation.

The unnamed driver was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Guelph Police confirmed.

If convicted, that charge carries a punishment of a $150 fine.

Len Humphries, 77, was crossing Speedvale Avenue West at Kathleen Street on July 29 when he was struck by a pickup truck heading east on Speedvale Avenue West.

Humphries was taken to Guelph General Hospital with multiple injuries and later transferred to Hamilton General Hospital where he died on Aug. 11.

His nephew told GuelphToday that his uncle developed pneumonia and infection while in hospital shortly before he died.

City staff have promised to undertake a full review of the intersection, which many in the area feel is unsafe.

One area resident said there have been other non-fatal collisions between vehicles and pedestrians crossing the road there and many near misses.
