It is being billed as a “Herculean” effort. And for good reason. There’s a lot of incredible strength involved.

On Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., many of Ontario’s strongest strongmen and strongwomen will muscle their way onto the University of Guelph campus in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph. Expect extraordinary feats of strength.

The annual Royal Cities Strongest Man and Woman Competition is hosted by Clydsdale Power. The competition will happen in the paved rear parking lot directly behind the Gryphon Centre Arena, appropriately along Powerhouse Lane.

There will be uncommon and dramatic feats of strength and power, including the flipping of 800-pound tires, dead lifts of automobiles, farmer’s walk competitions (walking while carrying very heavy weights), and a log press event. Proceeds will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters Guelph.

The local organization helps over 700 at-risk youth enrolled in the organization’s mentoring programs.

“We’re so excited to partner with Clydsdale Power at this event for another year,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters manager of development, Michael Treadgold, in a press release. “This event has quickly become an annual highlight for us, and we’re appreciative of the ongoing support.”

He said the number of children in the mentoring programs increases each year, and support shown by people like Giles Sharpe of Clydsdale Power is needed and appreciated. Sharpe is a competitor in strongman events.

Clydsdale Power is a non-profit organization founded by Sharpe, with a mandate to help strengthen communities through feats of strength. It has put on strongwoman and strongman competitions for charity for the past 16 years throughout Ontario. The organization trains men and women in the sport.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Guelph serves Guelph, Aberfoyle, Rockwood, Morriston and Puslinch. Learn more at www.bbbsg.ca.
