People will get a chance to learn about farming first hand and enjoy a hot breakfast in the process later this month at the second annual Breakfast on the Farm event.

The event takes place on Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Birkstead Holsteins at 7572 Sideroad 5, Elora.

“The premise is just to get people connected with agriculture,” says Jennifer Craig of the organizing committee.

“It gives people an opportunity to actually go on a dairy farm, take a tour and see how things work.”

Organizer Denise Kankainen heard about the Breakfast on the Farm happening in the London area during a conference.

“This is sort of her brainchild,” Craig said. “She was just very passionate about it being a way for people that wouldn’t get a chance to be on a farm to get a way to experience it.”

The event is a joint effort by the Fergus Fall Fair and Alma Optimist Club, with funds raised going to the Fergus Fall Fair.

Birkstead Holsteins, which has around 250 cows, has a robotic milking operation, which should be quite interesting for people, Craig said.

“You get to tour the farm, find out a bit about what else they do. This farm has quite an interesting way of composting, has some sheep and has some interesting partnerships.”

Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Four and under are free. Parking is available across from the farm.

The event Facebook page can be found here.
