The Grand River Conservation Authority has lifted its flood watch, but river levels remain high throughout the Grand River watershed.

The water has been high in the Eramosa and Speed rivers through Guelph in recent days, as rainfall and a flash melt last week caused sudden and dramatic runoff.

There is still a lot of snow along river and creek beds, and temperatures are expected to reach above zero highs throughout the week. GRCA expects river levels to remain above normal, as the results of last week’s major runoff.

There was no flooding in the Guelph area from the high water levels. An ice jam formed in the Grand River in the community of Cayuga south of Hamilton – near the terminus of the Grand River in Port Maitland. The jam remains in place but is no longer causing street flooding, according to a GRCA advisory.

The flash melt was followed soon after by the return of subzero temperatures, creating especially slippery and hazardous conditions around water bodies. The GRCA advises extreme caution around banks near rivers and creeks, saying they pose a serious hazard.

Parents are asked to keep children and pets away from all watercourses and off frozen water bodies. Ice fishing has been discontinued at all GRCA facilities.
