Brace yourself Guelph, it’s about to get very cold.
The coldest night of 2016 is about to settle on the city, and the frigid Arctic air will stay throughout the weekend.
Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold weather warning for much of southern and southwestern Ontario, as plummeting temperatures combine with high winds.
Guelph’s temperature is forecast by Environment Canada to dip to -23C Friday night, with a wind chill of a dangerous -38C. Snow flurries will taper off in the evening, with skies clearing Saturday.
But the cold will stick around Saturday, staying at about -16C during the day, and dipping to -28C overnight, with a wind chill of -34C. On Sunday the cold will begin to ease, with a high of -11C with plenty of sunshine.
Monday and Tuesday will feel balmy by comparison, with a chance of above zero temperatures on Tuesday.
Pedestrians were bracing themselves against the approaching conditions Friday afternoon, as flurries and high winds whipped through the city.
During extreme cold, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health advises residents to monitor the weather forecast, and to dress warmly if venturing outside. Stay dry, keep moving, and find shelter. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
Late Friday afternoon the City of Guelph was preparing to issue a message over social media reminding residents to be alert to the cold this weekend.
