Guelph and other cities are facing service changes to GO trains after low ridership and high COVID case numbers prompted Metrolinx to adjust their service operations.

In a recent news release from Metrolinx, it announced adding more temporary GO buses to service the Kitchener GO line, which includes Guelph.

With these buses, GO trains will not be available for commuters during weekday evenings or weekends on the Kitchener GO line.

Beginning last Friday, GO transit users coming from Guelph into Union Station can take buses to Mount Pleasant station, where they can transfer onto a GO train. This transfer will run Mondays to Fridays after 8 a.m.

GO trains will still operate from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. weekday mornings from Guelph Central GO to Union Station.

Scott Money, media relations for Metrolinx, says in an email all service adjustments aim to better align with how people currently use the transit network.

He adds that service changes Metrolinx aim to adapt to provincial calls to stay put when possible while balancing the need to provide a lifeline transit service for essential travellers.

With Metrolinx officials reporting GO transit ridership down more than 90 per cent, other GO lines will also see temporary GO buses instead of trains, including Barrie and Stouffville.
