Nobody was hurt, but some residents inside a 10-storey apartment building in Guelph have been displaced after a weekend fire.

Guelph Fire crews were called to 1020 Paisley Rd. Sunday morning after a fire inside a unit on the fourth floor of the building.

"Crews did encounter smoke conditions on the floor of origin, and the unit of origin," said Ryan Schubert deputy chief of administration at Guelph Fire.

He said people were evacuating as crews arrived on scene, and the building's sprinkler system activated, which he suggested controlled the fire.

Guelph Transit was called in to help provide temporary shelter, and Schubert said the property management company for the building is helping to find accommodations for those displaced.

It's not known how many residents are needing to find new homes temporarily, but Schubert said four units sustained damage.

The unit where the fire started had fire, water and smoke damage. Three units underneath it sustained water damage.

A cause and damage estimate is not available.

Schubert said it would be too premature to determine either at this stage, with the investigation still ongoing.

"We just want to reiterate and ensure that people living in multi-unit residential occupancies follow the established fire safety plans that are approved for those buildings," he said.
