Fire closes part of York Road temporarily

Call came in just before 8 a.m.

An early Monday morning fire on York Road in Guelph’s east side did enough damage to keep the owners out of their home for the foreseeable future. There were no injuries.

The fire at 868 York Road was called into Guelph Fire Department a few minutes before 8 a.m., deputy fire chief John Osborne said at the scene. Four fire trucks and another fire vehicle responded to a fire that appeared to originate in the basement.

Osborne said it was quickly under control, but a thorough search for extensions of the fire to other parts of the older, two-storey structure was being carried out. He added that heat exhaustion was a problem for firefighters. It was about 24C at that hour of the morning.

Osborne said the two residents of the house got out safety. They are the owners. Victim Services Wellington was dispatched to the location to help the victims with immediate needs and relocation.

“They will not be able to get back into the home for now,” Osborne said at about 8:30 a.m., adding that fire investigators were on their way to the scene.

The fire closed busy York Road during the morning rush-hour, between Elizabeth Street and Watson Parkway. Traffic had to find alternative routes in and out of the city.
