Guelph Public Library has come a long way since it opened its doors in February 1883 as the first free public library in Ontario. Today, the library is a large urban system with six locations and a bookmobile – plus an extremely high per capita number of readers.

The Guelph Public Library Board is pleased to release the library’s new five-year Strategic Plan. As part of a diverse and growing community, the Library Board understands the need to make library spaces and resources available to all.

By strengthening connections with community partners, the Library will focus on ensuring that everyone in our city has equitable opportunity to develop their skills, delve into their interests, and connect with their world.

The new strategic plan was developed in consultation with Overlap Associates and more than 1,500 partners, supporters, staff and community members. The Board was thrilled to reach out to so many individuals and groups for their input into how they would like to see the library grow.

Lisa Maslove, Guelph Public Library Board Chair shares, “This strategic plan comes at a pivotal time as it determines how the library will allocate its resources and drives our decision-making as we move forward. We thank community members for sharing their thoughts and ideas with us and hope they see their input reflected in our strategic goals.”

The plan outlines seven main strategic goals, as follows:

  1. Design a library to hold the heart of the community
  2. Reflect our changing community
  3. Create a dynamic space
  4. Bridge the gap
  5. Work together to build a resilient community
  6. Strengthen our reach
  7. Empower staff

Make Guelph Public Library a frequent destination where you’ll find something to inspire you, ignite your creative spark, lead you down a pathway of learning and make meaningful connections. Our doors are open and together, we are making our community better.
