The field is set for the Green Party nomination race for the upcoming federal election.
Two more candidates have been vetted, bringing the total seeking the nomination to five.
The local Greens will choose their candidate on April 5.
The two new candidates are Hayley Kellett and Jax Thornton.
Thornton and Kellett join City of Guelph climate change office manager Alex Chapman, Guelph Solar founder and local activist Steve Dyck and University of Guelph professor Ralph Martin.
Kellett is the Improv Incubator Director at The Making-Box Improv in Guelph.
“Hayley is passionate about the Green message and is confident that her unique ability to listen, connect and respond will allow her to get that message to the forefront of the upcoming federal election,” says the Green Party announcement.
Said Kellett: “I had never wanted to join anything political until I was introduced to the community that is the Guelph Greens. Mike Schreiner is an inspiration and I am excited to become part of the movement, in any capacity.”
Thornton is a lifelong Guelphite who an activist at a very early age, says the Green’s announcement.
They currently intern for The Peak, a grassroots magazine aimed at highlighting marginalized voices.
They has been active in raising awareness for animal welfare, volunteered for numerous causes, including Wellington Water Watchers, and is a member of the city’s LGBTQIA2S+ community.
“Jax believes that we must view climate change from an intersectional lens, and carefully examine the direct link between colonialism, capitalism and climate change, in order to properly address the coming impacts of global warming,” says their bio.
