If ever there was a question of whether or not Guelph residents supported the growing food truck movement in the Royal City, this question was answered with an emphatic “yes” on Sunday, May 29 in Exhibition Park.

More than 7,000 people attended the first annual BIG Downtown Food Truck Picnic in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph. More than $7,100 raised for the local charity, providing life-changing mentoring programs to more than 625 local youth.

This event was co-presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters and Sweet Temptations Cupcakery.

The lineups started early and sustained throughout the entire day, with attendees – many of whom were attending their first food truck event – eager to get their hands (and mouths) on a variety of delicious creations from the eight participating trucks.

Trucks included Chef Scotty Cooks (Bistro Tour), Mango Chutney, El Luchador, Fo’ Cheezy, Breakfast Blues & BBQ, Sweet Temptations Cupcakery (Sprinkle), Café du Monde Creparie and Schmuck Truck.

Each truck donated 10 percent of their daily sales to Big Brothers Big Sisters, as did other local vendors, Cleo the Clown and her Painting Pals, Sharp My Knife and Cupanion.

“We were truly amazed with the turnout for this first time event. Guelph clearly has an appetite for food trucks,” said Michael Treadgold, Manager of Development & Communications at Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We have every intention of making this an annual event and we’re so excited to have built new partnerships and friendships with these amazing vendors.

“We are so lucky to have the support of so many individuals in this community, who help make our programs so successful,” Treadgold continued. “We could not have enjoyed such a successful day without the support of volunteers, truck staff, other local vendors, and of course, the thousands of local residents who got a taste of what these kinds of initiatives are all about. This was truly a community effort.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph is the city’s largest youth mentoring charity, providing more than 600 at-risk youth with a role model, a mentor and a friend.

Established in 1967, the charity facilitates both one-on-one and group-based mentoring programs, serving the communities and schools of Guelph, Aberfoyle, Rockwood, Morriston and Puslinch. For more information, visit our website at www.bbbsg.ca.
