Former golf course a subdivision construction zone

Another 500 new homes coming to Victoria Road S.

The back nine of the former Victoria Park West Golf Club is now a construction site.

The 45-year-old short course, owned by Ted DeCorso, closed in 2011 after the land was sold to a developer. It was the course where Canadian professional golfer Bryan DeCorso got his start in the game.

The year after the sale, a plan for the Royal Valley at Victoria Park subdivision was submitted to the City of Guelph. A later application for an amendment to the plan increased the number of proposed dwellings from 489 single, semi-detached and townhouse units, to 503.

The land, at 1159 Victoria Road S. between Stone Road and Arkell Road, sat vacant and overgrown for about five years. Heavy equipment has been on it in recent days.  A sales office is under construction not far from where the clubhouse used to stand.

From the vantage point of Victoria Road, the former tenth and eleventh holes have been cleared of trees. Grading work is underway.

Two southern Ontario builders are partnered in Royal Valley – Mikmada Homes and Country Green Homes.

Country Green Homes is headquartered in Milton. In over 20 years, according to its website, it has built over 300 homes in southwestern Ontario.

Mikmada also has a subdivision underway in Waterdown, near Hamilton.

Royal Valley will occupy a parcel of land on Guelph’s east side totaling 39.3 hectares (97 acres).

Pre-registration is now underway at www.royalvalleyguelph.com.
