Garage sale and auction at Guelph Food Bank helps to 'keep the lights on' (12 photos)

The Guelph Food Bank has 10 dates set aside for garage sale, auction and barbecue during the spring and summer months

Friday and Saturday of this week, the Guelph Food Bank is hosting one of its many gigantic garage sale, auction and barbeque events at its Crimea Street location.

The sales run throughout the spring and summer months and are important, because the money fromt them helps to pay for operating costs, like heat and electricity for the non profit, said said Pauline Cripps, marketing and communications coordinator with the Guelph Food Bank.

Donations for the sales are usually accepted between May 24 and the August Civic Holiday, but Cripps said the food bank will still accept like-new items and christmas items. Clothing items for the food bank's Clothing Exchange are always accepted, she said.

Just about everything imaginable is up for sale at the garage sale -- from children's toys to books, Christmas decorations, dishes and other knick knacks.

The auction items are new or as-new items and also range from sealed Lego and Peppa Pig toys to food items, sports memorabia and the like.

The Guelph Food Bank also holds a barbeque during the events, with proceeds going toward the operating costs of the building.

Cripps said the food bank itself is closed for servicing during the sales.

"Unfortunately we don’t have enough space to do both simultaneously," she said.

A total of 10 dates — which run as two days together — are set aside for the sales each year. Including this week, there are still four more sales to be held.

This weeks' sale runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Additional sales will also run Aug. 23 and 24, Sept. 6 and 7, Sept. 13 and 14 and the final sale for the year will be held Sept. 21.
