Guelph Humane Society is holding a spontaneous garage sale on Saturday.

The Guelph Humane Society will hold a garage sale on it premises on Saturday. The funds will be used in the highest priority area of the organization, event coordinator Kelly Robison said.

Donated items are still welcome up until Friday. Spring cleaners wishing to donate can drop items off at the 500 Wellington Street West location. The entrance is directly across from the Home Hardware store on Wellington.

The sale happens from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of the animal shelter and offices. There will also be hanging baskets and patio pots for sale. Rain could hamper the event, but Robison said there is a contingency plan to move it indoors.

Donations have been coming by the box full, and some patio furniture has also been dropped off.

“We’ve had quite a lot of donations so far, but the more items the better,” she said.

The garage sale is also an opportunity to attract members of the public to the location to learn about upcoming events, visit the cats and dogs in the shelter, and perhaps make a donation.

The agency has to vacate its current location and find a new one, rather urgently. The lease on the city-owned property it occupies end at the end of the year. A property on Speedvale Avenue was purchased, but it ended up be unsuitable and was placed back on the market. The search continues.

The city's wastewater treatment plant is due to expand into the space occupied by the shelter.

“This event was sort of out-of-the blue, where we just said, hey, let’s do a garage sale,” Robison added. The following Saturday, June 4, is the organization’s Walk & Whine event, its largest fundraiser of the year.

“This is an extra event we thought to throw into the loop,” she said. “We have some new volunteers coming in, and so we will get them to help out with the garage sale.”

Walk & Whine is a day of food tastings at a number of Guelph’s favourite restaurants, including The Woolwich Arrow, N V Lounge, Sip Club, and Atmosphere. It is sponsored by Appetizingly Yours Events and Catering.
