Positive feedback from a recent speed test done by Metrolinx means Guelph may be one step closer to eventually having two-way all-day GO tain service.

Earlier in June, Metrolinx conducted a speed test in Guelph to try out a new signal system implemented at the Glasgow Street, Yorkshire Street, Edinburgh Road and Alma Street level crossings.

For testing purposes, trains travelled several times through these areas, reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour.

Results from the speed test showed the system can operate safely under the proposed future speeds, says the senior adviser for media relations at Metrolinx, Ross Andersen.

“The recent signal system upgrades and subsequent train speed tests verified that the system is safe and ready to manage increased speeds in the future as we work toward providing enhanced service to this region,” said Andersen in an email.

Train speeds will be slowly increasing in increments starting this fall. Andersen mentions Metrolinx is working very closely with the City of Guelph to plan for a staged implementation of future speed increases through the city.

“Once we have more details, we will come back to the community to share information and answer questions.”

Speed limit increases are not the only thing that has changed when it comes to GO train service in Guelph. On Aug. 9, Metrolinx restored one evening trip in each direction on the Kitchener GO line and there are plans to return to more pre-pandemic service this fall.
