Going to Comedy Church on Sunday

The Making-Box give many the chance to do comedy.

Good laughs can be lacking during a conventional church service, but at the Comedy Church they are what it’s all about.

Comedy Church, otherwise known as The Making-Box Workshop for Comedians, is a super casual two-hour whirlwind of comedic trial runs. It happens this Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon at The Making-Box location at 205-40 Baker Street. The event is on every second Sunday. All comics are welcome.

Participants are invited to place a few bucks in the collection plate as a contribution to rental costs.

“Comedy Church is very casual and it's where a lot of people try comedy for their first time,” said Jay Reid, a founder of The Making-Box, in an email. “It has more of a living-room feel than a performance feel. You may get nervous but it's really all about support.”

He said anywhere from 10 to 20 people come out each week. The comedian gets six minutes to do their bit. Spectators are not required to perform. Reid expects Sunday’s gathering to have slightly lower attendance given that the popular Hillside Festival is on.

Basically a drop-in space for new and more established comics, Comedy Church is an opportunity to workshop new, unpolished, or unfinished material. Each performance is followed by a round of feedback and suggestions from fellow comics.
On Monday, The Making Box will be helping individuals and businesses find a new level of productivity by using the tools of improvisational theatre in the workplace.

The introductory Improv for Business workshop happens from 10 a.m. to noon, also at the 205-40 Baker St. location.

The workshop helps participants truly listen, connect and react in ways that encourage trust, flexibility and collaboration in the workplace.

The Making-Box has worked with engineers, marketing firms, personal trainers, and the office staff of a leading bank on training in improvisational skills.

The arts organization recently surpassed its $20,000 target in a crowd-funding campaign to establish a permanent location in downtown Guelph. It raised over $24,000 in the effort. An upper floor space in the historic Petrie Building will be renovated.
