There’s going to be a Green Party party in the park, as the official nomination of Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner as the party’s Guelph candidate is held. The event is set for this Sunday, July 30, in the red pavilion in Riverside Park.

Schreiner, 48, has been an active member of the Green Party since 2005, and first ran for the Greens federally in the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes area in 2009.

He became the party’s Ontario leader later that same year, and ran in Simcoe-Grey riding in the 2011 provincial election.

Schreiner first ran in the Guelph riding in the 2014 Ontario general election, finishing third and garnering just over 19 per cent of the popular vote. The Green Party has longed believed that Guelph is a winnable riding for the party.

Party organizers expect a strong turnout Sunday for the ‘Party in the Park’ nomination meeting. The event starts at 2 p.m. and runs to 5 p.m. Schreiner will speak just after 3 p.m.

There will be live music by the Andrew Craig Soul Trio, and Joni NehRita, as well as food, and a keynote speech by Green Party of British Columbia’s Adam Olsen, a member of the legislative assembly in the western province.

The Ontario general election is to be held on or before June 7, 2018.
