Guelph City Council will be holding a special meeting on June 13 to further discuss the possibility of merging Guelph Hydro.

The meeting will take place at City Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. Prior to that council will hold a two-hour in-camera session on the issue that is not open to the public.

Anyone wishing to speak as a delegate at the open session needs to register with the city clerk's office by June 9 at 10 a.m.

"During the meeting, Guelph City Council will decide whether to continue researching possible mergers between Guelph Hydro and other publicly-owned local electricity distribution companies," said a city in a news release.

Last February, council decided to start a process of comparing the options of maintaining its full ownership of the utility with potentially merging it with other utilities.

"Since then, the committee met with 14 local utility companies to learn how mergers could affect Guelph Hydro’s operations, financial position, infrastructure, ownership structure, organizational culture, and local electricity distribution rates," the city said.

On June 13, the committee is recommending further research and analysis to determine if a merger is likely to benefit Guelph Hydro customers, the City of Guelph and the community.
