Guelph couple is stuck in Morocco, hoping to get a flight home to Canada on Tuesday.

Mike Essex and his wife Leonor Mariano, both retired Guelph school teachers, were on an organized tour that arrived in Casablanca on March 9.

"There's 18 of us, divided evenly between Canadians and Americans," said Essex in an email exchange from Marakesh. "The Moroccan government told all tour companies to stop their tours and get their clients out of Morocco."

"The (Canadian) embassy in Rabat has been in frequent touch, mostly urging us to leave Morocco as soon as possible," Essex said.

"That's easy to suggest but it has been impossible to rebook our scheduled March 22 Air Canada departure. Although the flight (Casablanca-Montreal) looks available on the Air Canada website,  there is much doubt that the flight will depart.."

Officially there are no flights but some citizens of some countries are being repatriated, Essex said.

"All businesses, restaurants, and cafes closed at 6pm today. Although it appears that our best chance might be a routing via the United States, that too has its problems."

Morocco reported Sunday that 28 people currently have the caronavirus. On Friday the number was seven. One person has died.

Mariano taught for many years at John McCrae Public School and Essex taught at Willow Road and King George schools.
