Guelph delegation to discuss affordable housing, Baker District development at AMO

Mayor Cam Guthrie will lead a delegation of Councillors and senior staff from Guelph at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa, Aug. 18 to 21.

The meeting topics include:

  • Guelph-Wellington’s successful Smart Cities bid to become Canada’s first circular food economy (with Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman);
  • Availability of surplus space at the Guelph courthouse for provincial hearings and tribunals (with Attorney General Doug Downey);
  • Affordable and rental housing and the International Malleable Iron Company redevelopment proposal (with Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Parm Gill);
  • The Guelph Innovation District and Baker District redevelopment projects (with Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Nina Tangri)
  • Two-way all-day GO rail (a joint delegation with Waterloo Region municipalities with Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney).

During the conference, Mayor Guthrie will co-chair a joint meeting of the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) and Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario (MARCO) with Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario MARCO ;Chair and Waterloo Region Chair Karen Redman. Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark is scheduled to attend the meeting. Mayor Guthrie will also lead two Large Urban Mayors’ Caucus of Ontario" LUMCO-specific delegation meetings: one with Minister of Finance Rod Phillips regarding municipal fiscal sustainability, and another with Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Christine Elliott to discuss provincial changes to public health and ambulance services.

The Guelph delegation will also meet with NDP and Liberal caucus representatives and Guelph MPP and Green Party leader Mike Schreiner.

Members of the delegation include Mayor Guthrie and members of Council; CAO Scott Stewart and the City’s Executive Team; and intergovernmental affairs staff.

About the AMO conference

The AMO conference features more than 70 sessions and workshops on municipal topics ranging from cyber security to cannabis legalization. About 2,000 delegates from across Ontario are expected to attend.
