Guelph General Hospital is asking for some members of the community who have some sewing skills.

Throught its fundraising arm, the Guelph General Foundation, the hospital is looking for people to sew fabric face masks.

The masks cannot be used by frontline workers, but they can be used by the general community, visitors and discharged patients.

"Although there is no sewn face mask that can effectively replace a medical-grade mask (such as N95 masks) for our frontline workers, they can be used for other uses such as the general community, visitors or discharged patients. This allows GGH to save medical-grade masks for higher risk environments," said the hospital.

"In fact, just recently, the Centre for Disease Control recommended wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission."

The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital is issuing a challenge to all sewers to collectively make masks for GGH:

What you will need:

  • Clean cotton fabric (you could consider bed sheets, tea towels, t-shirts)

  • Standard sewing supplies (ie: sewing machine, measuring tape etc.)

  • Rope Elastic, beading cord elastic will work (you may also use 1/8” flat elastic

  • Cut the elastic 7” long and tie a knot at each end (do not knot the ends of the flat)

"We will sanitize all sewn masks at the hospital but please use clean fabric to make your masks," said the news release.
