Southwestern Ontario, including Guelph, is getting a new area code: 548.
The Telecommunications Alliance reports in a press release that demand has outgrown the 519 and 226 area codes in the region, so new numbers being issued as of June 4 will have the 548 area code.
No existing numbers will be affected. Nor will 9-1-1.
"Introducing a new area code within a region already served by another code creates only minor changes. Adding an area code using the overlay method does not cause any numbers to change for current customers. And, local calling areas also remain the same," the Alliance said.
All local calls will still be dialed using 10 digits.
