The local NDP candidate in last month’s provincial election has confirmed she is running against Cam Guthrie for Mayor of Guelph.

Agnieszka 'Aggie' Mlynarz said she will run for the mayor’s seat in the Royal City, running on a platform of environmental sustainability and the elimination of financial waste..

“Yes, it’s true,” Mlynarz confirmed Friday by direct message.

A press release announcing her candidacy said citizens will have the opportunity to vote for progress, equality and prosperity.

‘As Guelph moves into its largest phase of new development, citizens deserve bold and visionary leadership that puts community interests first,' said the release.

Mlynarz intends on signing her eligibility papers Monday morning at Guelph City Hall. A campaign spokesperson said she will do a media availability at that time. Earlier this month, Mlynarz posted a photo to her Twitter account of City of Guelph folders for mayor/councillor and school board, teasing that she was thinking of running.

In 2014, Guthrie defeated the incumbent candidate to become Guelph's mayor, capturing 50 per cent of the vote. Guelph's next municipal election will be held Oct. 22.

As of Friday, Guthrie is the only candidate officially running for mayor. He signed his nomination papers on May 1, the first official day the city accept nominations.

Mlynarz finished in third place with 13,928 votes during the June 7 provincial election, more than 15,000 votes behind the winner, Green Party leader Mike Schreiner.
