NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH HYDRO
*************************
Guelph Hydro is warning customers that scam artists are often active around the time of a holiday weekend. Scams can come in various forms including:

  • Phone Scams - Scammers claim to be calling from Guelph Hydro and threaten disconnection unless payment is received immediately by credit card or gift card for an overdue bill or swapping out of a smart meter.
  • Text Scams - Fraudsters send out a text message claiming the customer is due a refund. The message contains a link to a fraudulent Interac e-transfer site.
  • Letter Scam - Mail scams involve letters being sent out to customers requesting payment for an outstanding amount owed for a smart meter deposit.

Customers should be aware that Guelph Hydro does not disconnect customers without plenty of prior notice.

Over the long weekend and at any time, please beware of any suspicious or unusual phone calls, text messages or letters that appear to be from Guelph Hydro.

Never provide your account number or credit card number, never follow instructions to purchase gift cards and don't click on links provided in text messages.

Remain vigilant and verify your account information with Guelph Hydro directly by calling 519-822-3010 during normal business hours.

Please inform your friends, family and neighbours to prevent them from becoming a victim of these scams.
