Guelph in Bloom...finally! (15 photos)

A photo gallery of Guelph's growing things

It seemed to take a long time for the grass to grow, the leaves to sprout, and the blossoms to bloom in Guelph this spring, but now that they are out the city is springing to life.

Cool temperatures throughout much of April and into early May left growing things dormant. The true appearance of spring has only emerged in recent days. But the fertile greening, sprouting and flowering of city streets and parks has progressed at a breathtaking pace.

“It wasn’t really that late,” said Tania Marthaler, part of the family that owns Brock Road Nursery in Guelph. “I think we were just itching for spring more than usual.”

Marthaler said the very mild winter planted the expectation that spring would come early. But the cold April “stopped everything in its tracks.”

Growing things are on the right track now. A trip through green spaces, down side streets and along sidewalks throughout the city this week turned up some gems of growth.

“Just to get outside, to feel the sunshine and reconnect with nature is so important,” Marthaler added. “It wakes everybody up.”
