With public safety in mind, the Guelph Jazz Festival has reimagined outdoor performances for an upcoming event called Arborienteering.

Starting July 25 and July 26 at 1 p.m., residents can enjoy 10 minute solos performed by musicians on the grounds of the University of Guelph Arboretum.

During the event, two artists will each perform under their own “tree” while residents walk around two tracks over a kilometre long. New solo performances will commence every five minutes during the two and a half hour event.

By walking around, residents can listen to the music as they please, providing an optimal experience in a time of physical distancing. A release says the music will also sound different depending on how guests move throughout the space, making it a novel experience.

Some performers featured during the event are Rob Clutton, Isaiah Farahbakhsh, Ben Finley, Nick Fraser, Rebecca Hennessy, Kathryn Ladano, Jim Lewis, Germaine Liu, Naomi McCarroll-Butler, Kayla Milmine, Paul Newman, John Oswald, Araz Salek, Doug Tielli & Mark Zurawinski.

Along with performances, guests will also receive a free book containing an event program, a musical score, and a fanciful field guide of the Arboretum grounds, which is produced in partnership with Publication Studio Guelph.

While there is no admission fee to attend, the GJF does require that people register ahead of time on their website. Additionally, guests are required to participate in a COVID screening process prior to entering the event. To learn more or register for Arborienteering, go to guelphjazzfestival.com.
