The Guelph Public Library is excited to partner with The Rotary Club of Guelph (1920-2020) to offer students in Grades 7 to 12 and adults the chance to express their creativity this month with a new online poetry competition called, The Night Sky.

As part of their Centennial celebrations, The Rotary Club of Guelph is helping people to learn more about the sky by donating a Planetarium to the Grand River Conservation Authority’s new Nature Centre at Guelph Lake. People will be able to go inside this planetarium and view a special simulation of the sky on the dome shaped ceiling. An Observatory in the Rotary Forest at Guelph Lake is also being installed, complete with retractable roof and three powerful telescopes to encourage more people in our community to explore the night sky.

As well, The Rotary Club of Guelph is building fully accessible year-round trails that will tie into Guelph’s trail system at Victoria Road going past Guelph Lake and through the Rotary Forest to the new Nature Centre that Rotary is helping fund.

Be inspired! Look to the night sky, spark your imagination and capture the moment in a poem. Use any poetic style you wish – up to 150 words. The sky is inspirational in so many ways. Choose to share with us however it touches you!

There is no entry fee for ‘The Night Sky’ Poetry Competition but all submissions must be received by email only to [email protected] by 9 p.m. on April 15, 2020. All poems must be your original writings, 150 words or less and typed, single spaced in a Word document. Please do not submit your stories via Google docs or PDFs. Your submission must include the title of your poem, your name, phone number and grade (if applicable).

Winners will be announced on Friday, May 1, 2020 and the poems will be displayed in the Main Library for the month of May. Prizes will be awarded in each of the following categories: Grades 7 to 9, Grades 10 to 12 and for adults with $100 each for first prize and $50 for second place.

Ben McCarl, Rotary Club of Guelph Centennial committee member, shares, “While celebrating our past, we look to the future and look to the sky!”

What are you waiting for? Be inspired. The sky’s the limit!
