An investigation is underway after a serious single vehicle crash in Cambridge that had the eastbound 401 completely closed for several hours on Friday night.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says a 66-year-old man from Guelph was ejected from his vehicle near Homer Watson Boulevard.

"A vehicle rolled over in a ditch, far off the highway," says Schmidt. "A single male occupant, a 66-year-old man from Guelph, was in that vehicle at the time, he was transported to a trauma centre and is in serious condition with potentially life-altering injuries."

Officers at the scene are looking into multiple factors.

"There is no indication right now of alcohol or drugs, but again, that's under investigation," says Schmidt. "We'll be looking at speed and seatbelt use as well, considering the person was ejected."

Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage is asked to come forward.

"It will take some time before the investigation is complete," says Schmidt. "There (was) evidence across all lanes of the highway."
