Guelph Mercury Rising, a collection of stories written by former staff of the now-defunct Guelph Mercury newspaper, will be officially launched on Saturday.

The event, which is open to the public, takes place at the Albion Hotel from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Mayor Cam Guthrie, MP Lloyd Longfield and MPP Liz Sandals are expected to attend.

Guelph Mercury Rising is a collection of mostly fictional short stories produced by Guelph publisher Vocamus Press. It was produced by 19 former Mercury writers.

A portion of the book’s proceeds will support Action Read Community Literacy Centre. The non-profit, Guelph-based, literacy support group was formerly a charity aided by the daily newspaper and is Vocamus Press’ charitable partner.

Copies of the publication will be available for purchase at the launch. The function will also feature a short video telling the story of the 149-year-old newspaper’s closure and community reaction to that development.
