The field is now set for the 2019 federal election in Guelph after the Guelph NDPs chose Aisha Jahangir as its candidate.

Jahangir beat out Andy McCann-Pappin in the vote cast by roughly 75 party members at the Evergreen Seniors' Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Jahangir, a registered nurse and married mother of two, was the final candidate to be chosen in Guelph.

She will compete against MP Lloyd Longfield (Liberal), Steve Dyck (Green Party), Dr. Ashish Sachan (Conservative), Mark Paralovos (People's Party of Canada).

"Work. Lots of work," Jahangir said of what's next.

"We have to get started. We're the last ones to make the announcement of our candidacy, the last party who has gotten a candidate, and there's a lot of work to do. We will start soon, for sure.

"But first of all I want to bring together the NDP team, working alongside with the executive. I haven't decided who's going to be on the team, but I'm going to make an informed decision."

Jahangir said she will take a leave of absence from her job at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre closer to the election.

She was asked about being the only woman in the field.

"I think the fact that I come with a healthcare background is more advantageous than thinking of the fact I'm female," Jahangir said.

"I'm going to bring the social movement together. Social justice, fighting for equality," she said, admitting she was a bit overwhelmed by the events of the day.

Jahangir thanked her team and paid respect to McCann-Pappin, who has worked for a number of years within the local NDP party.

"I would be honoured if you would help us work together," she said in her acceptance speech.
