Members of the Guelph Police Service will support 10 families in the community this Christmas through a donation made to the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s Adopt-a-Family program.

Police Chief Gord Cobey made the announcement at Thursday’s meeting of the Guelph Police Services Board.

Cobey said more than $10,000 was raised by members through donations and a bake sale.

“We just wanted to make sure the board was aware of that as an example of one of the things our members do throughout the community,” said Cobey.

He noted the initiative was co-chaired by Const. Brad Saint and Insp. Andrea Ninacs.

Adopt-a-Family is run every year by the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, in which families in need are matched with donors.

On its site, Adopt-A-Family says the program is about more than gifts under the tree; it's about providing families with support and hope during the holidays.

'While children's wish lists include all the normal gifts that any child would want, the families' needs very often include basic necessities such as diapers, bedding and winter clothing.'

Board chair Don Drone said sometimes initiatives like this go unnoticed.

“I want to thank the people who took the lead on raising the funds for the Children’s Foundation and for those families,” said Drone. “This is yet another example of the many things done by the police —both on the civilian side and the uniformed side.”
