Guelph Police use of force way up in 2015

Force used during 64 incidents, up from 46 the previous year

Guelph Police report they were required to use force a total during 64 incidents last year, all of them justified.

That number was up from 46 the previous year.

Some of those incidents involved more than one level of force. In total 171 levels of force were used, up from 135 the year before.

The figures are in the 2015 Annual Use of Force Report delivered at Thursday's meeting of the Guelph Police Services Board.

"Guelph Police officers attended to 64 incidents where either one or more levels of force were required to bring the situation that they were faced with to a peaceful and successful resolution," the report says.

Officers are required to issue a use of force report whenever force has been required on duty.

"In all of the incidents, the officers were justified in using the force that was outlined in their report," the annual report says.

Highlights of the use of force:

- 2: number of times firearms were discharged.

- 25: number of times firearms were drawn.

- 11: number of times conducted electrical weapons (such as Tasers) were deployed.

- 25: number of times empty hand force was used.

- 0: number of times tear gas was used.

- 0: number of time canine force was used.
