Nearly $4.5 million worth of recreational marijuana products were sold in Guelph during the first three months of 2021, show statistics from Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS), the agency that oversees sales throughout the province.

That’s enough to put Guelph in 14th place among Ontario municipalities, 39th for per capita sales out of 160 cities.

Between April 1, 2020 and the end of this past March, about $840 million worth of recreational marijuana products were sold throughout the province, accounting for 44.1 per cent of the marijuana market. The rest was bought from the illegal market.

Eighty-four per cent of legal marijuana sales took place at physical store locations, versus 16 per cent for online sales.

There are currently nine stores in Guelph licenced to sell recreational cannabis.

The OCS’ recently released annual report notes one Guelph store did particularly well with sales. The Spiritleaf Cannabis Dispensary on Edinburgh Road had the fourth-highest sales of any store in the western region, though specific sales figures weren’t provided.

Provincially, dried flower is the most popular offering, making up nearly 60 per cent of all sales, followed by vapes and pre-rolls at 16 and 12 per cent respectively.

During the last half of 2020, Guelph stores sold about $7.5 million worth of recreational cannabis products.
