Guelph Transit is getting some behind-the-scenes upgrades courtesy of the federal government.

Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield joined Mayor Cam Guthrie and MPP Liz Sandals at Guelph City Hall Friday afternoon to announce the city is getting $500,000 under the federal government’s Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.

The money will be used on a $1 million project to replace four hoists at the transit garage and to purchase three transit operational vehicles needed by transit supervisors.

The City of Guelph will match the money for the $1 million project and has the option of using provincial gas tax money for some or all its portion.

“This is an exciting day for Guelph Transit,” Guthrie said at the announcement.

“Today’s announcement is about infrastructure. It’s a little less visible to the public, but extremely important,” Guthrie said.

Infrastructure is the backbone to the on-road transit service, he added.

Longfield said the feds are investing $180 billion in infrastructure projects over the next 12 years and so far has rolled out $5.8 billion in 2,000 projects across Ontario.

“We’re already seeing the results of our investments across the country” including concrete pads on street corners, new transit stops and upcoming fare boxes in Guelph.

“These purchases will help to serve the on-route supervision of transit operations and provide more reliable equipment when repairing transit vehicles,” Longfield said.
