Last month, an anonymous donor pledged to match donations up to $50,000 to help the Guelph Youth Music Centre fill its $100,000 deficit after it was hard hit by the pandemic.

On Monday, the Guelph Youth Music Centre met its goal of raising $50,000 after donations came pouring in from donors near and far.

“We’re so thankful for all our generous donors in helping us reach our goal in such a short amount of time,” said Gabriella Currie-Ziegler, executive director of the GYMC in a press release.

“We’re over the moon with delight and gratitude for the support. Every dollar will allow the GYMC to come back stronger than ever and enable vital programs to continue for children and youth in our community.”

The not-for-profit organization was established in 1992 and dedicated itself to the development of youth through music and art.Pre-pandemic, the GYMC would annually have 5,800 program participants with 2,200 children using the centre every week, 22,760 community participants, 30 diverse arts programs and 75 concerts and special events. Because of lockdowns and gathering restrictions, programs at the GYMC were suspended resulting in a reduction in rental income.

“The Matching Challenge was an opportunity to make each donation go further and double the impact. The GYMC looked to the community to keep the dream alive, and preserve and build on what was made possible by the contributions of so many past donors,” said the GYMC press release.

“This was an opportunity to build on the tens of thousands of volunteer hours, and the love and dedicated work of teachers, artists, and musicians who benefit youth, and all in the community.”

GYMC sees Children and youth from six months to 25 years-old engage in many programs such as music, fine art, drama, dance, brass rubbing, heraldry, and support for children with special needs.
