Guelph's Bread Bar expands its horizons

Popular spot now offers catering

Local entrepreneurs and foodies gathered Wednesday evening to break bread and socialize during an open house at the Bread Bar on Gordon Street.

“We are working to expand our catering service,” said Julie Johnson. “We invited our corporate clients to sample the new menu.”

Johnson and her husband Jeff Crump are owners of Earth To Table the parent company of the Bread Bar.

“We have a Bread Bar in Hamilton that has been going for eight years,” said Johnson. “It will be two years this January for the location here in Guelph.”

Johnson grew up in Guelph and therefore feels right at home in the city.

“I used to be a massage therapist here,” she said. “I know the vibe of Guelph.”

Guests at the open house included investment advisor David van Veen from Richardson GMP and his wife Gael, musician and food activist Kate Vsetula from the Funky Mamas, former Guelph City Councilor and chef Gloria Kovach and Laura Daniel from Guelph Tent and Event Rentals.

Local chef, Scott Yates, owner of the Chef Scotty Cooks Bistro Tour food truck, came out to show his support.

“I eat here often,” said Yates. “I love the local food scene.”

Also present was well-known Guelph foodie and former owner of La Cucina and Appetizingly Yours Catering, Ingrid von Cube.

“Julie used to work for me,” said von Cube. “I am consulting with the expansion of their catering.”

The Bread Bar motto is, “Good ingredients matter” and that, said Johnson, has been their focus.

“We are all about seasonal cooking and eating local as much as possible,” she said. “The response has been really good. There was a lot of buzz from the beginning. The community has really embraced us.”
