Guelph's kids love to read

Library Summer Reading Club already has 1,170 registered
books

The Guelph Public Library is running a Summer Reading Club for kids of all ages and reading levels this summer.

So far 1,170 kids have registered for the program across the many branches within Guelph, and new kids are signing up every day.

The TD Summer Reading Club is co-run by TD Bank and 2,000 libraries across Canada, but each individual library creates their own theme and programming, said Ben Robinson, the Children & Teen Librarian for Guelph Public Library.

“Our theme this year is ignite your imagination and explore Guelph,” Robinson said.

Robinson shared that the registration process takes about one minute, and children are put into different categories based on their reading level. All ages, reading levels, and interests are encouraged to participate.

The categories include pre-reader, reader, and rockin’ reader. Kids can read with their parents or guardian, on their own, or even listen to audio books. The club is intended to ignite and inspire interest in literacy and learning, Robinson said.

The Summer Reading Club includes many different incentives, from the opportunity to choose a free book when a reading card is filled out, to a bead to add onto a necklace for every twenty minutes of reading completed.

Each Guelph branch has their own reading button that kids can collect, with an animal that is specific to that branch, as well as a specific summer theme, said Robinson.

“We have hundreds of prizes over the summer, there’s always something to gain in terms of a prize,” Robinson said.

For kids over 12, there is a Teen Summer Reading Club that includes reading challenges, prizes, and a chance to enter into a larger contest.

Robinson also shared that each branch is hosting daily events throughout the day for kids to attend. Printed calendars with events and times are available at each library branch, or online.
