Drivers won't be able to access Highway 401 from the Hanlon Expressway for another three days while a jet fuel spill that occurred Sunday is being cleaned, says a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation.

Access to the Hanlon from the 401 is open.

The Hanlon southbound is closed at County Road 34. Drivers seeking to merge on to the 401 are being detoured to Brock Road.

Around-the-clock clean up is progressing, but will take up to three more days to complete, said the MTO spokesperson. The work is expected to be wrapped up sometime on Friday.

“To facilitate the work there are lane reductions in place on Highway 401 and the Highway 6 North interchange on-ramps are closed,” she said. “We understand the impacts to traffic and are making every effort to complete the work as quickly as possible.”

The MTO spokesperson said the tanker truck was estimated to be carrying more than 40,000 litres of jet fuel. She said the majority of the fuel spilled after the tanker rolled over.

Clean up of the spill is being overseen by the Ministry of the Environment.

On Tuesday, the MOE confirmed the jet fuel has entered the Mill Creek and Aberfoyle Creek that run under the 401 and that some soil contamination has occurred.
