The first-ever 50/50 Hospital Lottery for Guelph General Hospital launched online ticket sales for its first monthly 50/50 draw at the end of June. In its first three months, the lottery has raised nearly $100,000 for the hospital.

Proceeds from the first two months were specifically used towards the purchase of 33 new endoscopes.

The high image quality produced by the new devices allow our specialists to find and remove pre-cancerous growths called polyps more easily. They are also used for numerous other medical procedures, in fact, about 7,000 procedures requiring an endoscope are performed at Guelph General Hospital in a typical year.

Guelph General’s gastroenterologist Dr. James Hewak expressed: “We are so grateful for the people in our community who support the hospital. On behalf of all of the staff who use these scopes, and more importantly the patients who benefit from them, I say a huge thank you. The reality is that any of us may need these procedures and the whole community benefits from having these best-in-class scopes here.”

The 50/50 Hospital Lottery is continuing to offer monthly draws with proceeds directly funding other pieces of equipment essential in the delivery of the highest quality patient care at Guelph General Hospital.

“The endoscopes are an example of numerous pieces of equipment that will be funded by the 50/50 Hospital Lottery and that fall under our recently launched Together, We Care capital campaign,” explained Suzanne Bone, CEO of The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital. “So playing our lottery is just one more way for our community to support our Hospital’s most urgent fundraising campaign.”

October ticket sales have already exceeded $37,000 and the jackpot will continue to grow until 9 p.m. Oct. 29 when ticket sales close. The winner will be drawn at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30 and will win half of the gross ticket sales.

At this time due to COVID-19, tickets can only be purchased online at www.ggh5050.ca. The lottery is licensed through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, lottery license #12011.
