Traffic was snarled on Speedvale Avenue late Friday afternoon as fire crews dealt with a basement fire on the corner of Speedvale Avenue and Metcalfe Street.

Three pumpers arrived on the scene at around 2:45 p.m. as well as ambulance and police. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Firefighters could be seen through a basement window spraying water and some burned furniture lay on ground outside the one-and-a-half storey detached  home at 301 Speedvale Avenue West.

The smoke billowed from the basement for a few minutes but no flames were visible outside as people gathered to look. Later, fire crews brought in large extraction fans to help deal with the smoke.

Immediate cause of the fire was not known.

Speedvale Avenue was closed off in both directions.
