As University of Guelph alumni return to the city to reunite with former classmates and cheer on the Gryphons’ football team this weekend, Guelph prepares for this year’s homecoming celebrations.

The University of Guelph, Guelph Police Service and the City of Guelph are using several strategies in the hopes of reducing alcohol-related offences, noise complaints, littering, public urination and other nuisances including:

  • Increased University of Guelph communication with students, including neighbourhood visits, to provide information about neighbourhood responsibilities, laws, and regulations
  • Increased police and Bylaw presence in the downtown and in neighbourhoods where previous issues have occurred
  • Increased enforcement of the Ontario Liquor License Act and Provincial laws and regulations
  • Increased waste containers in targeted areas

In addition to these efforts, the Downtown Late Night Task Force will continue its Safe Semester project this weekend. For information about the project, visit the City of Guelph website.

“Again this year we have developed a plan with our various partners to respond to Homecoming. It is our goal for those participating in the Homecoming activities to do so safely and responsibly, and with respectful consideration for other residents.  We will have a high presence in the community to ensure this is a successful and enjoyable day”, says Chief Jeff DeRuyter.

To report illegal activity in any neighbourhood, at any time of day, residents are asked to call Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212.
