Silveri Jewellers in the West Hill Centre, 995 Paisley Road, managed to clean up in time for Sunday opening, after glass was shattered in the business during a break, enter and theft before dawn on Sunday.

Store manager David Chiswell said the front door, which has a strong protective film over it, was shattered with a heavy object, possibly a brick.

“It took quite a bit of effort for them to get in here,” Chiswell said.

That effort didn’t result in a large haul for the thieves. Very little was left on display in the store and the culprits took only about $1,500 worth of jewelry, Chiswell said.

“They’re probably kicking themselves after what they went through to get in,” Chiswell said. He said the glass on the front counter was also smashed, and that’s where items were stolen from.

“For us there is the expense of a new door and all new glass in the one case,” he added. “But we were open on Sunday.”

Guelph Police arrived at the scene to investigate just before 6 a.m. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Const. S. Boyd at 519-824-1212, ext. 7579. Anonymous tips can be left at Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
